The Hawks vs the Cats
Reigning AFL champions Hawthorn are happy to hand over the title of 2009 competition favourites to Geelong,
despite their grand final triumph over the Cats.
Geelong
hung on to defeat Hawthorn by eight points in a thrilling grand final replay at the MCG. Played before a crowd of 69,593, the game began at the standard and intensity expected
of such an encounter.
Geelong won that quarter emphatically, kicking six goals to lead by 33 points at three-quarter time.
The Hawks lost the match, but they would not have lost any confidence for season 2009.

Four days on the gold coast !
Monday March 9 is “Labour day” in Victoria which means it was a public holiday so people don’t work. I asked
my boss if I could take the Friday off and then I had four days
vacation… Lucky me! I booked a plane to meet my father in Coolangatta on the gold coast. I’ve already been there 3 times before so I was not going there to visit but
to watch the final of the Quiksilver pro.
Being a good patriot, I came to support the European team who despite my cheering were not able to beat the
Australians. It is often easier for the home team.
Each time I’ve been to Coolangatta I had seen the beginning of the contest and I’d never got the chance to
watch the final! This time would be the one! At least that is what I thought. In the end the waves were not that good and so the contest was delayed but not my flight unfortunately! Once again, I
missed the final. Anyway, the weather was good and being on vacation is still great!
Instead, I made the most of my days at the beach and caught up with some friends.
Saturday morning we watched the news and so we learnt that Hamish, a Category Four cyclone with wind gusts of 260 km per hour was
about to reach Queensland and probably the gold coast on Monday night. Our flight being booked for Tuesday morning it would be impossible for us to leave the gold coast and go back
to Torquay! I can’t tell you how happy I was! Staying in Coolangatta instead of going back to work.
Regrettably, Hamish was delayed too and my flight was able to take off and land in Melbourne. I’m back to work! This week I’ll be working with the
lawyer of the company, I think it will be interested!
Ps: As you can see, I’m surviving Australia despite bushfires, cyclones and sharks! I’m a tough
girl!
Quatre jours sur la gold Coast
Le lundi 9 mars est un jour férié dans le Victoria. J’ai donc demandé à mon maître de stage si je pouvais
bénéficier d’un jour de congé et ainsi profiter de quatre jours de vacances. Je suis donc parti rejoindre mon père à
Coolangatta sur la Gold Coast. Ayant déjà eue la chance de visiter ce petit endroit du Queensland ce n’est donc pas avec des envies de visites que je suis partie mais plutôt avec l’intention de
regarder la première compétition des championnats mondiaux de surf.
C’est donc en grande patriote que j’ai tenté d’apporter un soutien moral aux surfeurs Européens qui malgré mes
encouragements, n’ont pas su s’imposer face aux Australiens. C’est qu’il est souvent plus facile pour ceux qui surfent à domicile.
Peu importe cette défaite de la France ne m’ayant pas trop déstabilisé, j’ai pu profiter de la plage comme il
se doit. J’ai aussi eu l’occasion de retrouver quelques personnes et n’ai donc pas eu le temps de m’ennuyer!
Enfin samedi soir, j’apprends avec beaucoup d’enthousiasme qu’un Cyclone prénommé Hamish ne devrait pas tarder à venir souffler vers Coolangatta d’ici
lundi soir. Il serait donc accompagné de vents dépassant les 260 km/h et mon avion étant programmé pour décoller mardi matin se retrouverait finalement cloué au sol et moi avec, bien entendu.
Conclusion, bloqué sur Coolangatta et donc encore et toujours en vacance. Seulement, Hamish a pris du retard et mon avion n’a eu alors aucun mal à décoller et à me ramener à la dure réalité
qu’est le travail. Je suis de retour sur Torquay et passe la semaine à travailler en compagnie de l’avocat de la boîte.
Ps : Comme vous avez pu le remarquer, je survis à travers les incendies, requins
et cyclones… Je tends à croire que je suis invincible !

Yesterday everybody living in Torquay has recieved a message from the police of Victoria.. I recieved it and it
was pretty weird and scary :
"Extreme weather in Victoria expected Monday night and Tuesday. High
wind and fire risk. Listen to local ABC Radio for emergency updates. Do not reply to this message"
Hier, tous les habitants de Torquay ont recu un message de la police du Victoria. Je fut plutôt surprise et à
vrai dire un peu effrayé de lire un tel message :
" Des températures extrêmes sont attendues
dans le Victoria Lundi soir et Mardi. Un vent fort avec de gros risques d'incendis. Ecouter ABC radio pour connaître les sécurités misent à disposition. Ne pas répondre à ce
message."
Pour le moment il pleut... donc tout va pour le mieux!

Should we save Spring Creek
?
The Australia Government has proposed a plan, which refer to a huge residential development on the Surf Coast that would more than double the size of Torquay.
Approval of the plan could mean an extra 6400 houses built to the west of Torquay, in an area known as Spring
Creek.
So, up to 1000 opponents were expected to attend
a public rally at Spring Creek last Sunday. Their cause has been boosted by the support of international musician Xavier
Rudd, who has performed at the rally.
I was there. Everybody has to dress in
red, I was wearing a red shirt. I was more exiting by the fact that something is happening in Torquay. Indeed, I can’t really tell you if I’m opposed to a development in this
place.
It’s hard to tell, I’ve been living there only for 2 month and I feel like it wouldn’t be too bad if there
were more people living in Torquay. It would be good for the commerce and it would also bring a good atmosphere.
Local people seem not to share my point of view and I can understand it. It must be hard for people to see
the place they live, the place they may have grown up changing into a new city.
This development will significantly change the
character and feel of Torquay, people don’t want to live in a city and it’s being forced on them. Furthermore the spring creek area is a habitat for a lot of wildlife and the
development would completely destroy its homes.
Not easy to discuss those arguments. Torquay people won’t be able to go against the development but
they may obtain a more appropriate development, not medium or high-density but something that’s suitable for that
area.

nouveaux habitats qui doubleraient la taille de Torquay.
Approuver cette décision entraînerait une construction de 64 000 maisons dans la petite réserve de Torquay
connut sous le nom de Spring Creek.
Ainsi plus de 1000 opposants se sont réunis
dimanche dernier à Spring Creek, dans l’espoir d’être entendus. Leur cause a été encouragée par la présence du musicien international Xavier Rudd. Ce dernier, pour le plaisir de tous, n’a pas hésité à clôturer le rassemblement par 4 ou 5 de ses chansons. Un concert à Torquay, qui l’eût cru
?
Ne manquant aucune occasion de m’amuser, j’étais présente à ce rassemblement. Une seule contrainte: porter du rouge. C’était donc vêtu de mon pull rouge que je me suis mêlée à la foule déchaîner formée par les
opposants.
Seulement je ne serais capable de vous dire si je suis opposée ou non à un tel développement dans cette petite
ville. En effet, n’y vivant seulement que depuis deux mois, je pense que quelques habitants en plus de ne seraient pas de trop. Une bonne chose pour le commerce comme pour
l’ambiance.
Mais les habitants de Torquay ne semblent pas partager mon avis et je peux le comprendre. Ce n’est pas facile
de voir le petit bout de terre dans lequel nous vivons et dans lequel nous avons peut-être grandi, se transformer en une nouvelle ville.
La plupart des habitants (souvent originaire de grande ville) affirment être venus trouver paix et tranquillité
en cette cité miniature qu’est Torquay (11 000 habitants pour Torquay et Jan Juc réunis) et ces constructions troubleront
définitivement ce calme.
De plus, la réserve de Spring Creek est un lieu habité par de nombreuses espèces animales et végétales, les
nouveaux bâtiments détruiraient alors leurs habitats et forceraient ces petites bêtes à déménager.
Pas facile de contredire de tels arguments. Les habitants de Torquay ne pourront pas éternellement échapper à
l’évolution humaine, seulement peuvent-ils obtenir une transformation plus appropriée, mieux adaptée à
l’endroit.

Torquay, what can I tell you about
Torquay?
It is a small town close to the beach, where most of people know each other. The weather can be quite extreme with one day being hot
and the next day being cold.
Australian people are very
friendly, everywhere you will go they will address you by "hello, how you going?" which is pretty weird actually, because they don't expect you to answer that question, they will
even be quite surprise if you answer "I'm good what about you?" In fact it is just a way to address people.
Here in Torquay most people stop living around
5:30 pm, all the stores close and it can be hard to get a coffee at this time. Once we tried to have a drink after work in the main street of the city and all coffee place were
closed, it is not very fun then. Restaurants still open until 9pm during the weekend and probably 8pm during the week… It's one side of Torquay I really need to get use to!
Oh! Don't get sick in Torquay! I
did and it took me a long time to know what I've got and what I should take. I had an appointment at 12h30 so I came on time. I was pretty happy to see there was just one person before me, I told
myself it would be quick. Cool! So the woman before me has been called and 1 hour later so did I. My boyfriend was waiting with me and I was so crazy I told him "How can he be so long, it's just
one patient!"
I can tell you I have quickly understood why he was so long. When I came into his office he asked me to teach
him some French! After he gave me advice on some movies that I should watch. It was 30 minutes later that he finally asked me why I
was here! I told him that I feel pain in my ear so he started looking inside and suddenly asked my boyfriend to come check into my ear. It was very awkward! At the end of the
appointment I had some medication for my ear but also some papers about different vaccination I should get from Melbourne and the pill I needed to take for the year to come.
He was a very nice man but I truly hope I won't get sick anymore.
Parties in Torquay? Not really, there is just 3 bars which close at 1, but we still can drive to Melbourne (1h30 away) to have some fun!
Anyway it is a good city to do sport, I take tennis and pilates class. I try to keep myself busy in Torquay.
Torquay, que puis-je bien vous apprendre sur la petite ville de Torquay ?
Donc tout d’abord, Torquay est une petite ville en bord
de mer ou la plup
art des habitants ont la chance de se
connaître. Le temps peut être chaud comme froid mais vous êtes déjà au courrant donc ne nous éternisons pas.
Les Australiens sont très amicaux et nous abordent toujours par un « hello ! How you doing ? » phrase à laquelle ils n’attendent aucune réponse. D’ailleurs si vous répondez par
un « I’m good thank you. What about you ? » Deux cas de figures se présentent : ils sont surpris, mais finissent par vous répondre, ou alors ils se taisent tout
simplement.
À Torquay, les gens arrêtent de vivre dans les allants tours de 5h, ce qui signifie qu’une fois ma dur journée de travail terminée je n’ai aucune option autre que de
gentiment rentrer chez moi manger pour ensuite me coucher ! Pas facile, mais pourtant plutôt très réaliste. Les restaurants eux sont ouverts jusqu’à 9h les week-ends et 8h la semaine. C’est le
petit piège de Torquay, tu
planifies une petite soirée restaurant, mais une fois que tu te présentes à un restaurant, le personnel te dit gentiment qu’il est trop tard et qu’ils arrêtent de servir, alors tu regardes ta
montre te disant « mince j’ai encore passé trois heures sous ma douche ! » Bien non pas du tout, il n’est que 8h30 ! Enfin maintenant on ne me la fait plus, il n’est pas encore 7h que je suis à
table attendant qu’on prenne ma commande !
Un autre petit conseil, ne pas tomber malade à Torquay à moins d’être une personne dotée d’une grande patience (ce que je ne suis pas).
Il m’a donc fallut deux heures pour découvrir ce que
j’avais et pouvoir obtenir mes médicaments. Une heure d’attente puis une heure de consultation. J’arrive donc chez le médecin, et constate qu’il n’y a qu’une personne devant moi. Cette personne
est appelée au bout de 5 minutes, mais ne ressort que 50 minutes plus tard ! Je me demande alors de quelle grave maladie est atteinte cette pauvre patiente pour que le médecin lui accorde autant
d’attention. Bien maintenant, je comprends, il a fallu 30 longues minutes au médecin avant qu’il ne me demande enfin le sujet
de ma visite. Il a tout d’abord souhaité un petit cours de français particulier et ma ensuite récompensé par une liste de film qu’il
me conseil fortement de visionner. Je suis ressorti avec mes médicaments, une liste de différents vaccins que je devrais faire à Melbourne et la pilule pour les douze prochains mois ! Plus
que ce que j’avais souhaité obtenir ! Ah! Mon copain a également eu le privilège d’observer l’intérieur de mon oreille, le médecin y tenait beaucoup. Un vrai plaisir !
Sinon, des soirées à Torquay ? Pas tellement, non ! les
trois bars de Torquay ferment leurs portes à 1h, mais nous avons toujours la possibilité de sortir sur Melbourne (1h30 de route).
Torquay reste tout de même une bonne ville pour se
reposer et faire du sport, je commence à avoir mes petites habitudes, entre mes cours de tennis ou pilate, je tente par tous les
moyens de m'occuper.
